We built this because we needed it.

Rukia Labs started as an internal tool at Zindua School.

We were running cohorts in Nairobi and hitting the same wall every term. Instructors were spending more time marking than teaching. Fee reconciliation meant someone matching M-Pesa messages against a spreadsheet by hand. Compliance reporting meant rebuilding the same exports from scratch. Every platform we looked at was built for a different kind of institution in a different kind of market, and the gap showed up in the details that mattered most to us.

So we built our own. First the grading. Then the payments. Then the early warning system that told us which students were slipping before it was too late to do anything about it.

Other school directors started asking what we were using. That is when it stopped being an internal tool.

Rukia Labs is now a platform any institution can run on. Zindua School is still our first customer and still the one that finds our problems first. We think that matters. We are not selling software we have never had to depend on.

How we got here

The milestones behind the tool we built for ourselves.

  1. 2019 / 12Zindua School is foundedWe opened in Nairobi, Kenya teaching Software Engineering and Data Science. Our focus was on curriculum development and early traction, so we went for off-the-shelf tools to power everything from operations to learning.
  2. 2023 / 02Profitability and aggressive scalingWe were past product-market fit and started growing very fast. Operational efficiency became important as the team grew; efficiency problems started surfacing. Internal tool choices for learning, student management, and billing became critical cogs.
  3. 2024 / 11Building an internal learning infrastructureThe pain of scaling profitably got to us. No LMS fit our needs fully — we were merging tools with data silos to achieve the same objective. With manual operations quadrupling at scale, we built our own learning infrastructure to centralize, then optimize, the student, instructor, and admin experience.
  4. 2025 / 10Rukia Labs is bornInteractions with partner companies and other school directors surfaced how valuable what we built internally could be for the market. This drove us to transition from an internal tool to a platform other institutions can run on.
  5. 2026Growth phase and market adoptionEducational institutions and companies across East Africa run on it. Zindua is still customer zero, where we find problems and dog-food solutions. Our AI assistant now automates repetitive instructor and admin actions and supports students 24/7, grounded in course content and their progress.
